BEAMing allows the quantitative detection of cancer gene mutations with high sensitivity and selectivtiy.
The workflow of BEAMing includes the following steps :
- Emulsion PCR
- Flow Cytometry
BEAMing stands for Beads, Emulsions, Amplification, and Magnetics. For more information see Dressman D. et al. (2003)
- It is a technology to perform single-molecule PCRs on magnetic beads in water-in-oil emulsions.
- The core process is the transformation of a population of DNA molecules into a population of beads each coated with thousands of copies of identical sequence.
- The technology has the capacity to detect and enumerate mutant and wild-type DNA when present at ratios greater than 1:10,000.
- BEAMing has unparalled sensitivity and selectivity (100-fold higher than conventional technologies).
